Pet parents traveling to Portland, Maine, will want to discover the delicious signature lobster the city is known for and check out the annual Maine Brewers Festival that celebrates the local craft beer community.
Portland takes a lot of pride in its microbreweries, and features a few dog friendly bars where you and your pooch can kick up your heels and share a “cold one.”
1. The Snug – 223 Congress St., Suite 1 (map), 207-772-6839
Be aware that this local Irish bar features a fiery bartender named Michelle who everyone either loves or loves to hate. Yelp reviewer Lindsey L. writes, “Don’t be surprised if you see a dog wandering around or sleeping on one of the stools – the bar mascot, obviously.” Check out the sleepy pooch here. So if your Irish Setter is feeling a bit homesick, you might want to sniff out the Snug!
2. The Thirsty Pig – 37 Exchange St. (map), 207-773-2469
Although this pub gets its name from the gourmet sausages it serves, there is also a revolving list of local craft beers to wet your whistle. So if you’re searching for some tasty brats and brews, this place is for you. “Dog friendly deck, veggie hotdog options and beer in the heart of the Old Port,” writes Yelp reviewer Beth R. “What’s not to like?” Be sure to say “Hi” to Fitzy, the pub’s official deck dog!
3. Novare Res – 4 Canal Plaza, Suite 1 (map), 207-761-2437
Novare Res means “to start a revolution” in Latin, and this bar has done that by winning several awards, such as Best Bar in the Phoenix Best of Portland 2011 and being selected as one of USA TODAY’s top 10 beer gardens in 2011. Novare Res features more than 30 revolving taps and kegs, and more than 300 types of bottled beer. Yelp reviewer John A. writes, “Yes, everything about this place was rad, but the best thing about Novare Res is their dog friendly patio. I sat and drank good beer with good people and watched dogs play. I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in Portland.”
Cheers!
